Thanks to major innovations in AI, Level 4 and Level 5 Autonomous Vehicles may not be as far off as previously believed. This leads us to wonder, what will the “driver” experience look like in a car that does not actually require any driving? How will people inhabit this new autonomous space and what will they do while they are there? And finally, what will the role of the car be in relation to the city around it and the people inside of it?

His latest work focuses on the governance of real digital cities, as part of the Audacities project conducted with FING (Fondation Internet Nouvelle Génération – Next Generation Internet Foundation), and on the future of autonomous, shared mobility, as part of the New Mobility, Clean Mobility project.
He has been conducting research at IDDRI since 2010 on a number of issues linking cities and the ecological transition: the transition to low-carbon cities and urban modelling; policies against fuel poverty (in housing and mobility) and affordable housing policies; analysis of the linkages between lifestyles and technical systems in the sustainable city project; and urban planning issues. Recently, he has developed a research series on digital cities, analysing data challenges in “smart” cities and the potential of urban crowdsourcing tools.
Mathieu is a graduate of ENSTA ParisTech and has a PhD in economics. He completed his thesis at Mines ParisTech under the supervision of P.N. Giraud on the planning of low-carbon cities.
Today braking system is a major source of emission of PM released by traffic. Tallano is a startup and

Electric Vehicles have long been touted as the “future of mobility” and yet they are far from being widespread on the roads. Many potential drivers are affected by “range anxiety” and the very real question remains of whether many cities’ power grids are even capable of hosting EVs en masse? Relying on a wealth of expertise and experience from efforts to “electrify” transport in France, the panelists will address the pressing challenges by looking into new charging solutions and discussing what it will take to convert mobility in cities to electric once and for all.

This panel aims to understand how we can improve the adoption of free-floating scooters in cities. Despite the fact that free-floating scooters reduce pollution, congestion and CO2 emissions in cities, this first/last-mile solution faces an uphill battle in winning the hearts and minds of the public, policy makers and the press. How can scooter operators encourage cities to give up four wheels for two?

This panel will explore the evolving roles and relationship of public and private operators in providing better and cleaner mobility options for citizens. It will dive into the challenges cities are facing and how PTAs and private actors are now collaborating more than ever to overcome these obstacles, while also taking care to ensure public transportation remains at the heart of a city’s mobility offering.
“MaaS” and “Multimodality” are the ultimate buzz words in the mobility industry today. But are these just other fancy labels or part of a shift that we all urgently need to be a part of? Are we really paving the way for smarter transportation or just inventing a smarter packaging? Our goal is to define what puts our cities in motion, what the evaluation criteria for Mobility as a Service players should be and how TRAFI’s Mobility Platform fits into that.

Yannick will be participating in the panel Smarter Charging: Is the Grid Ready for Electric Vehicles? on Thursday, October 17 at 10:00
These days, electric cars are shaking up mobility. Mobility is becoming more digital, more autonomous and increasingly shared. In the face of climate change and pollution in large cities, electric mobility offers an appropriate and more sustainable response. Now, everything seems to be in place for its large-scale development. Almost 9 million electric vehicles are expected to be on Europe’s roads by 2030. Concerted political efforts and major advances in lithium batteries bring new possibilities. Meanwhile, stricter regulations on greenhouse gas emissions are accelerating this move towards electric technology. Automakers are investing massively in R&D and their factories, as newcomers move into the market to provide products and services such as electricity, batteries, applications and interoperable charging systems. A whole new ecosystem is taking shape.
Thomas Chretien is Nissan West Europe’s Director for Electric Vehicles & Ecosystem. Nissan’s EV team is dedicated in developing the awareness and benefits of zero emission mobility not only through vehicles but considering the overall EV ecosystem including charging infrastructure, energy services and partnerships. Thomas started his career 14 years ago at Nissan Europe headquarters and held different Sales & Marketing positions at Ford and Alfa Romeo. He joined back Nissan West Europe in 2012 as Product Specialist and took over EV Marketing management in 2015. He has been nominated EV & Ecosystem Director in April 2017.

Speaker: Tim Smedley, Author, Clearing the Air
Globally, 19,000 people die every single day from air pollution. The annual number of deaths – 7 million – is far greater than those from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and car crashes combined. And it is getting worse. Between 2005 and 2010, the death rate from air pollution rose by 4% worldwide. For Tim Smedley, an award-winning sustainability journalist for the Guardian, Financial Times and the BBC, air pollution at first was just another environmental story to file. But this story got under his skin and into his veins – literally, as it turned out. Clearing The Air is his quest to understand air pollution – what it is, what it does to us, and what we can do about it. The journey for the answers took him around the world, including Delhi, Beijing, Helsinki, and Paris. He returned with some harrowing stories and, surprisingly, a lot of hope – we have the answers to air pollution. We just need to implement them.

Tim Smedley is an award-winning sustainability and smart cities journalist, who has written for the BBC, Financial Times, the Guardian, The Sunday Times, and New Scientist. His first book, Clearing the Air, was published internationally by Bloomsbury in March.
Tim will be delivering the keynote Air Pollution in the Age of Autonomy on Wednesday, 16 October at 10:30
Air pollution has become the world’s greatest environmental health risk, and science is only beginning to reveal its wide-ranging effects. Globally, 19,000 people die each day from air pollution, killing more than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and car accidents combined.
What happened to the air we breathe?
Sustainability journalist Tim Smedley has travelled the world to try and find the answer, visiting cities at the forefront of the fight against air pollution, including Delhi, Beijing, London and Paris. With insights from the scientists and politicians leading the battle against it, and people whose lives have been affected by it, Clearing the Air tells the full story of air pollution for the first time: what it is, which pollutants are harmful, where they come from and – most importantly – what we can do about them. Air pollution is a problem that can be solved. The stories uncovered on this journey show us how. Clearing the Air is essential reading for anyone who cares about the air they breathe. And this much becomes clear: in the fight against air pollution, we all have a part to play. The fightback has begun.
